Palenque, Mexico

Termite nest!  Eek!!

Mexico celebrates a holiday called "Carvinal" this coming week.  I still have yet to understand what exactly they are celebrating but the news on the street is that the week of Carnival is a little crazy- lots of drinking and loud music all night.  We decided since the kids are out of school that week anyway that we would pack up and head to some of the ruins that we had planned to see toward the end of our trip.

Yesterday we spent the day in Palenque, Mexico visiting the ancients ruins there.  Palenque started 200BC and was abandoned 900AD.  We had a fun day exploring the ruins and taking a jungle tour.  Only 5 percent of Palenque is uncovered so it was fun to go on the jungle tour and see evidence of more ruins.   We swung from Tarzans vine, heard monkeys and enjoyed the thick jungle.  Hayden and Brittan earned $5 for eating a live termite!  Our guide explained to us that termites are edible and actually pretty tasty!  The kids trooped up and down the ruins and had a great time.
